Market Introduction:

Vietnam has a coastline of about 3,260 kilometers, with dense rivers, lakes and abundant fishery resources. Vietnam's marine aquaculture area includes 580,000 hectares of bays, 300,000 hectares of tidal waters and more than 30,000 hectares of saltwater lakes. Vietnam's freshwater aquaculture area includes 2,860 rivers, nearly 400,000 hectares of lakes and natural or artificial reservoirs, 56,000 hectares of ponds, 85,000 hectares of pools, etc.

In 2013, fin whales, shrimps and tuna were the main imported products, accounting for 91% of the total seafood imports. In the first eight months of 2014, Vietnam imported $709 million worth of seafood, of which shrimp products accounted for $337 million, accounting for 48%, tuna imports accounted for $126 million, accounting for 18%, and fin whale imports accounted for $193 million, accounting for 27%. India is the main supplier of shrimp and tuna, with the value of these two products in Vietnam reaching $248 million, accounting for 35%. Taiwan's bonito exports to Vietnam were $48 million, accounting for 7%, and Norwegian seafood exports to Vietnam were $40 million, accounting for 5.6%.

On December 4, 2014, the Vietnam Association of Seafood Processors and Exporters stated that despite a slight increase in Vietnam's domestic seafood production, Vietnamese processors in 2013 increased their imports of raw materials for outsourcing, processing and export, with imported seafood from 83 countries and regions, worth $720 million, a year-on-year increase of 10.2%. India accounts for 24% of seafood imports, Taiwan accounts for 10.5%, Southeast Asia accounts for 8.7%, the EU accounts for 8.2%, Japan accounts for 8%, Norway accounts for 6.5%, South Korea accounts for 4%, the United States accounts for 5%, and the rest comes from other countries and regions.

In the future, China will be a large market for Vietnamese aquatic products. According to the China-ASEAN "Early Harvest" plan, Vietnam has reduced almost all export tariffs on aquatic products to China. In 2012, Vietnam reduced the tariffs on 484 agricultural and aquatic products exported to China to zero to fulfill all its relevant commitments in the China-ASEAN economic cooperation. This will greatly promote the export of Vietnamese aquatic products to China, especially when China enters the fishing ban period every year, Vietnam's aquatic product exports to China will have the best conditions of time and place.
