Market Analysis
Vietnam is the manufacturing center of Southeast Asia, with rapid economic development and strong industrialization driving the demand for energy. In terms of electricity, the original power facilities have not been updated in time, resulting in insufficient power production capacity, and the grid absorption capacity has restricted development, but the market potential is huge. By 2022, Vietnam's total installed capacity of renewable energy, including wind power and solar energy, will exceed 85,000 megawatts, and the scale of the power system will rank among the top in ASEAN in terms of total installed capacity.
Currently, Vietnam is a hot spot for investment and trade in power technology and equipment. The annual growth rate of this market is as high as 20-25%, but its domestic self-sufficiency in equipment and materials is only 30-55%. Domestic and foreign companies are competing fiercely for market share in technology and equipment. Among them, the sustainable development of Vietnam's power is particularly critical, and great progress has been made in this regard.
In 2021, Vietnam's power generation was about 255 billion kWh, with an annual compound growth rate of about 7.6% from 2017 to 2021. By the end of 2020, the total installed capacity of Vietnam's power system was about 56 GW. In 2020, the maximum load capacity of Vietnam's power system was about 38.7 GW, and the crude reserve rate of the power system (excluding wind and solar energy) was 34.3%. The current average electricity price in Vietnam is 1,533-2,580 VND (6.3 to 10.75 US cents) per kilowatt-hour. As Vietnam's economy grows, industrial, commercial and residential electricity consumption will rise rapidly. In the next 10-15 years, Vietnam will have many investment and trade opportunities in power generation, transmission and distribution, and clean electricity.
